RYLA

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an annual event sponsored by Rotary International. RYLA is a training program for youth intended to develop leadership skills, responsible citizenship, and personal growth. The program serves as an opportunity to connect with youth, provide effective training experiences, encourage leadership, and recognize public service.

Rotary districts 7620 and 7610 jointly hold RYLA over the MLK, Jr. birthday weekend in January at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase. Each participating Rotary club sends 1-3 high school students. Rotaract has been involved in RYLA by participating as group and cabin leaders.

Rebuilding Together

For the past several years, Rotaract of Howard County has partnered with our parent Rotary club, the Columbia Rotary, to help repair homes in our community. Rebuilding Together occurs each April at several homes throughout the county. Repairs have involved painting, gardening, cleaning, and much more. For more information on Rebuilding Together in Howard County, please visit the organization's web site.

Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen

Rotaract of Howard County has volunteered with the Our Daily Bread Hot Meal Program since 2008. Run by the Catholic Charities of Baltimore, Our Daily Bread serves the hungry and homeless from all over Baltimore City. Feeding an average of 733 hungry people a day, 267,397 meals were served by the volunteer staff in 2009. Rotaractors volunteer by serving meals, bread and tea, as well as by cleaning plates and tables. Rotaract has also donated special items for Thanksgiving meals, as well as other items of need such as ziplock bags and toilet paper. In 2010 the club has been serving regularly at Our Daily Bread on the second Saturday of each month. Click here to find out more information about volunteering at Our Daily Bread.
